Will I need to contact you regarding my rising 6th grade AIG student?

AIG identification carries over from elementary to middle school within WCPSS.  AIG records are sent along with cumulative folders.  We receive reports which indicate the names of our AIG students and their area(s) of identification.

 

How are AIG students served in middle school?

AIG students are clustered and scheduled into one or two sections for Language Arts and Math based on area of eligibility. These clusters of AIG identified students are served in a regular classroom setting.  Mrs. Carissa Smith, the AIG Teacher, works with Student Services to ensure your child's correct placement in an cluster class. 

Mrs. Smith collaborates with math and language arts teachers to plan differentiated lessons, activities and projects during common planning time.  She works directly with AIG students during K9, our enrichment/ remediation period and in book clubs that meet during lunch.  She may push into language arts or math classes as requested and/or pull students out of language arts or math class on occasion.

If my child was identified as Academically or Intellectually Gifted in another school system, what process is followed to pursue identification in WCPSS?

There is a transfer/ reciprocity process to follow.  A review of all gifted documentation from the other school system is required before a student can transfer into our gifted program.  

My child is not already identified as Academically or Intellectually Gifted but I believe he/she shows potential. (Likewise, my child is already identified in one area, reading or math, but I believe he/she shows potential in the other area).  What do I do?

Parents may nominate their child for AIG testing during one of two nomination windows.  A written nomination is required and may be sent via email to Carissa Smith, AIG Teacher, at csmith8@wcpss.net.

Once a nomination is received, data is collected including EOG performance, teacher and parent observational checklists, benchmark scores, student work samples and student grades.  This information is shared with our School Based Committee for Gifted Education (SBCGE) who makes the decision on whether or not to refer the student for evaluation.  Both the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) and the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (IOWA) are group administered to those students who are referred for evaluation.  The SBCGE reviews all test scores in conjunction with previously collected data and determines if (a) the student qualifies for services, (b) the student does not qualify for services or (c) additional individual testing is required to determine eligibility. 

This process takes a semester to complete with students who qualify beginning services at the start of the next semester.

Have fun and enjoy personal enrichment classes with academically-motivated students from around the world in Duke University’s Honors Institute.  This international and elite program challenges young students to explore advances in technology to design robots or advances in forensic science to solve crimes. Students can also learn the science behind making new medicines and new developments in genetics.

PAGE Super Saturday

PAGE of Wake County Announces Fall Super Saturday event
PAGE (Partners for the Advancement of Gifted Education) is a nonprofit organization interested in supporting and encouraging the development of gifted students.  PAGE sponsors the WCPSS Spelling Bee and twice yearly Super Saturday events- enrichment classes for children in grades K-8.
